Nicole Kidman makes a man out of Zac Efron in gothic thriller The Paperboy
Nicole Kidman has an impressive effect on men’s testosterone levels. Husband Keith Urban began sprouting a beard after starting his relationship with the Academy Award-winning actress.
And Zac Efron said he grew up during the four weeks he worked with Nicole on the wonderfully lurid Southern gothic thriller The Paperboy, in which they have some racy scenes.
Nicole laughed when I mentioned what Efron had told me about working with her.
‘The rite of passage with me. I made him a man. Oh, no!’ she cried, in mock horror.
‘My husband said he started growing a beard since going out with me. He didn’t have much facial hair before, so I hope I bring out the testosterone in them.’
Well it’s December 1st already and that got me in the mood to dig some Christmas-sy stuff out and Nicole’s ‘Somethin’ Stupid’ music video with Robbie Williams from Christmas 2001 came straight to mind! So after some searching I finally came across a good quality version of the full video, and have now replaced the screencaptures we already had from the video with much better, almost HD captures. I have now finally caught up the Gallery with the most recent appearance photos from this year. Photos from the last 5 events Nic has attended have been added to the Gallery – all pictures of which are in HQ! It’s interesting to see that she is out promoting The Paperboy again, and I wonder if the studio are going to try to involve her in awards season.

When Lee Daniels’ “The Paperboy” debuted at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival last May, the reviews were hardly glowing. The Twitterverse was full of salacious tweets of crude acts by an Oscar winning actress and snarked about over-the-top Southern campiness – all out of context, of course. Even In Contention’s own Guy Lodge seemed torn over the film seemingly want to like it, but only rewarding it with a B- (and that was one of the more initial positive reviews). In fact, so few of my peers seemed to champion it (and those who didn’t like it hated it), that I tossed it in the back of my mind as a disappointing misfire for Daniels. Financier Millennium Entertainment decision to distribute the picture themselves seemed to be the final nail in the coffin. If no mini-major was going to take the time to acquire a “sexy melodrama” starring a mostly shirtless Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, John Cusack and Matthew McConaughey it wasn’t worth rushing to see, right?
In the months that followed “The Paperboy” made the cut at the Toronto and New York Film Festivals, but by September this pundit was distracted by awards season and Daniels’ latest wasn’t seriously on anyone’s radar. Press screenings were missed and before you knew it, “The Paperboy” wasn’t even in theaters anymore (at least in the LA area). This was just going to be a film I’d have to catch on a long flight across the Atlantic or on a premium cable channel next year. So, when a screener for the picture arrived before Thanksgiving weekend it piqued my curiosity. Millennium must believe in this picture more than I thought. A few hours over the holiday break were reserved to view the now infamous “Paperboy.” And ever so humbly I’ll admit I made a huge mistake in not watching it earlier.

Okay, kids, listen up: Best Supporting Actress is a hot category this year. We’ve got Sally Field in “Lincoln,” Jennifer Ehle in “Zero Dark Thirty,” Anne Hathaway singing her guts out in “Les Miz,” and Amy Adams in “The Master.” Jacki Weaver is sensational in “Silver Linings Playbook.” But wait there’s one more: Nicole Kidman’s sexy, incendiary performance as hot hot hot Charlotte Bless from “The Paperboy.”
Millennium dropped the ball on this film, which Lee Daniels directed specifically to look like a freaky Southern gothic circa 1968 with zoom in closeups and a kind of muddy patina to the film. But there is an Oscar DVD, and it’s gone out to Critics Choice voters and everyone else. If you’ve got it, watch it for Kidman’s work. It would be a shame to let it fall through the cracks.
Charlotte is one of Kidman’s best characters. She’s completely out there, wild, uninhibited, afraid of nothing. She looks like a young Ann-Margret. Charlotte is in keeping with Kidman characters from her many forays into indie filmmaking, like “Fur” or “Birth” or “Dogville” or “Rabbit Hole,” for which she was Oscar nominated. And let’s not forget her back-to-back home runs in “The Others” and “The Hours.” No other “movie star” takes so many risks doing small budget, edgy character work as Kidman.
Another blast from the past for you today, these are the two episodes of Aussie drama/soap A Country Practice that Nic guest starred in way back in 1984. She played Simone, a teenage glue-sniffer.
So let’s get this new site plan going, with a small update. I recently came across a really old and rare poster for Nicole’s first movie, Bush Christmas – it’s a scanned version because it has creases through it, but it features a previously unseen (yet very small) still of Nicole in the film.
I’ve also replaced one of the stills from the film with a beautiful high quality (HQ) version – yay! It’s the one with the file title of ‘hq001′ in the Stills album.
Hello again! Once again, apologies for being so absent here. Yet again it’s the same issue of me not having motivation for the site. As hard as I try I cannot keep myself interested in following new news, photos, work etc. of Nicole’s these days. I mentioned last year about focussing the site on a particular time period of Nicole’s career, and again my plans are going back to that. I feel like it’s that way, or just closing the site. I will do my best to catch up and keep up with everything til the end of 2012, and from 2013 my plan at the moment is to focus this site on Nicole’s career up til about 2005/6. This probably won’t be permanent, ie til the end of time, but it will be long-term.
I keep wracking my brains to figure out a way to keep this site alive to keep you and me happy, and this is the best I can come up with. Just thinking about Nicole in Cold Mountain or Birthday Girl, for example, reignites my love for her work, and my plans for the site will allow me to focus on that, and provide a really in depth, high quality resource for her. I have thousands of high quality photos waiting to be added, I plan to re-capture as many of Nicole’s films as possible in higher quality, I intend to get myself a new scanner and start scanning my oh-too-large Nicole magazine collection, and more …. there is the potential for lots of updates and new things, they will just be made up of older things. This will also take the ‘pressure’ off of having to update with new news etc. when I may not have the time due to ‘real-life’ changes.
I know most of you will also still want to keep up with new news, and I am considering various options to do this through the forum and our exceptionally loyal members there. Stay tuned for news on that in the next few months.
There will also be ways for you to contribute and get involved in the site more, in terms of both new things and the older things, if you’re interested.
