Today, the 2,100 randomly selected Screen Actors Guild nominating committee members are getting their ballots. They will then have a few weeks to see everything before jotting down their choices.
Votes for nominees may be cast online or via mailed paper ballot. Votes must be received by the Guild’s official teller, Integrity Voting Systems, by Monday, Dec. 13, 2010 at 5 p.m (PT). Nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be announced at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010 at 6 a.m. (PT)/9 a.m. (ET), telecast live on TNT and webcast live on tnt.tv and tbs.com.
The SAG members will likely rely on screeners and on their own memory from screenings they attended. Some films will play very well on screener, while others, not so much. The year’s best performances have somehow been about the power of two. Two co-stars coming together or pulling apart. If you look behind one great performance, in other words, you will see many supporting faces that help them get where they want to go.
So let’s talk about the year’s strongest performances so far and the supporting players who helped prop them up.
Rabbit Hole – this is a film that has two strong leading contenders in Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart. It is also tailor-made for the SAG, it being based on a successful play and all. While Kidman is getting much attention, it’s been said that Eckhart’s great work has been all too often overlooked. Best Actor is always a tight nut to crack but the SAG could be the voting body that thrusts Eckhart into the race in a big way. Dianne Wiest is the most likely supporting actor up for consideration, and right now we’re all wondering not whether Wiest will be nominated, but just how many nominations is Rabbit Hole going to get. Picture? Director? Screenplay? Most likely supporting nod: Dianne Wiest.

Backstage.com have listed Sweet Bird Of Youth as an upcoming production, with a projected opening date of Fall 2011:
Sweet Bird of Youth, a revival of Tennessee Williams’ 1959 play about an aging movie star and an ambitious hustler. The New York Post reports that Nicole Kidman will star and David Cromer will direct. Target opening: fall 2011.
Following a 3-part Best Picture rundown and a Best Actor roundup, I continue my occasional series highlighting Oscar contenders in various categories by turning to perhaps the most competitive one of all in a very competitive year:
2010 is one of those years when you almost wish the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences could have created 10 slots for Best Actress, just as they did for Best Picture. Usually it’s hard to even fill the Best Actress ballot with five legitimate contenders because of the normal sorry state of strong roles for women, particularly in studio films. But this year there’s clearly something in the water and some performances which, in another year might have actually won, likely will not even end up with a nomination this time around. That’s how fierce this competition is. One key reason could be that some of the top contenders like Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, and Tilda Swinton also took the reins of their projects and moonlighted as producers in order to shepherd difficult material that might never have made it to the screen otherwise. Here’s the alphabetical lineup of hopefuls and their Oscar chances as we head into Thanksgiving:
NICOLE KIDMAN in RABBIT HOLE (Lionsgate) – No one in this group has consistently taken more career risks with chancy material than Kidman, but her touching work her as a mother trying to cope with the loss of her 4 year old son is the best work she has ever done on screen and that includes her Oscar winning The Hours. With Lionsgate acquiring the film in Toronto, the only question that remains is how deep can they campaign this after others have gotten a head start. OSCAR CHANCE: Although she won just 8 years ago, stars like Fonda , Field , Foster and Swank all won second Oscars in this category in even less a time span. This year’s comeback Kid-man, don’t count her out of pulling an upset.
In contrast to 2009′s heavily American lineup, most of this year’s contenders for the Golden Globe’s drama pic award exude a distinctly international air. Even the U.S.-based stories demonstrate a Continental brand of verbal sophistication and visual flair that should sit well with the Hollywood Foreign Press — and make their selection process that much harder.
“Rabbit Hole” Classic Precursor: With highly theatrical material filmed in tight hand-held closeups, half the time you might think you’re watching John Cassavetes’ “Faces” (1969). Shot at a Globe Nod: May exude more indie intensity than most pix the foreign scribblers ordinarily single out. If Not the Big One: Don’t bet against seven-time nominee (three-time winner) Nicole Kidman making it eight.
Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban have been confirmed as the first two Aussie stars to appear on the Sydney editions of The Oprah Winfrey Show being taped here on December 14.
Hugh Jackman and wife Deborah Lee Furness, Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, Cate Blanchett and Jon Bon Jovi, who is touring here, as well as other “local heroes” are also being tipped to appear, although no other guests have yet been confirmed.
Kidman and Urban will also appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show on November 30, in a “teaser” episode, as will a number of Aussies who’ll tell Winfrey and her 300 audience members what they can expect on Oprah’s Ultimate Australian Adventure, when they depart a week later for their eight-day trip.
On the same show one more audience member will win a last-minute ticket to join the trip. That person will initially be flown to Perth in Western Australia before meeting up with the rest of the Oprah travel party in Sydney.
As posted about yesterday (post below), Nic attended a Q&A for Rabbit Hole at the Tribeca Cinemas last week, and I’ve added a photo from that event to the Gallery, courtesy of hollywood-elsewhere.com. Nic also attended the Australians In Film screening and Q&A for the film later that week, and HQs from that are now in the Gallery, thanks to Cher! I don’t think we have any further details or quotes etc from the Australians in Film Q&A yet, but I’ll keep an eye out.
Nicole attended a Tribeca Cinemas Q&A Screening of Rabbit Hole last Tuesday (16th) in New York City. Sadly there aren’t really any photos, but we do have a couple of reports from some reputable bloggers who moderated/attended the event, plus a video from one of them. The big screen adaptation of “Rabbit Hole” began in a Starbucks.
A few years ago, Nicole Kidman was sitting in a Nashville outpost of the coffee chain, reading the New York Times. Intrigued by the review of David Lindsay Abaire’s play, she embarked upon a plan to make it into a movie, eventually enlisting John Cameron Mitchell to direct the film.
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Academy Award® winner Nicole Kidman with the Cinema Vanguard Award at the 26th edition of the Fest, which runs January 27 -February 6, 2011, it was announced today by SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling. The Tribute will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the historic Arlington Theatre.
The Cinema Vanguard Award was created in recognition of an actor who has forged his/her own path – taking artistic risks and making a significant and unique contribution to film. The award has previously been awarded to Christoph Waltz, Vera Farmiga, Stanley Tucci, Peter Sarsgaard, Kristin Scott Thomas and Ryan Gosling.
“Honoring Nicole Kidman is so exciting for us here at SBIFF,” comments Roger Durling. “Her work is immensely diverse and with this year’s heart-wrenching and brilliant performance in ‘Rabbit Hole’ – a project she helped develop as well – it is exactly who we should be celebrating with the 2011 Cinema Vanguard Award.”
With each of her performances, Nicole Kidman represents the actor in its finest and most polished form. A woman of many talents, she effortlessly navigates through a diverse range of genres; mastering drama, horror, comedy, romance, and even the musical. In her upcoming film Rabbit Hole, which she also co-produced, Kidman plunges heart-first into the role of Becca Corbett, a wife and mother who experiences the ultimate loss.
