Nicole Kidman says being a mum helped her “feel” her latest character as a grieving mother in the gritty drama Rabbit Hole.
“Being a mother – and that’s the most terrifying thing as a parent [losing a child] – my ability to jump there psychologically was available, which is what you want as an actor because a lot of the times you don’t want to be forcing emotions or forcing an understanding a character,” she told a US chat show on Thursday.
“From the minute I read the character I could just feel her,” says Kidman, whose role in the critically acclaimed film, which she also produced, is generating lots of Oscar buzz.
Rabbit Hole, the story of a couple who lose their child, was adapted from David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name.

As posted about on the night, Nic attended a New York premiere of Rabbit Hole on Wednesday evening! She looked elegant in a navy blue embellished Clements Ribeiro dress with her red hair in a loose up-do. She posed on the red carpet with her husband, Keith Urban, and her director and co-stars from the film, John Cameron Mitchell, Aaron Eckhart and Sandra Oh. You can also see her with her producing partner who she developed this movie with, Per Saari, at the after-party. Nicole’s looking wonderful here, and so happy! I don’t know about you, but I can’t get enough of all this Rabbit Hole promotion (which is good, because Nic attended another event yesterday, so stay tuned for photos from that)!
170+ photos from the premiere have been added to the Gallery!
EDIT: A number of videos and articles from the premiere have now been added further down this post.

Nicole Kidman’s Grammy-winning hubby Keith Urban isn’t the only crooner in the household.
At the NYC premiere of her new drama Rabbit Hole Thursday, the actress — who showed off her own vocal talents in Moulin Rouge — told UsMagazine.com their two-year-old daughter Sunday “sings incessantly!”
Continues Kidman, “She has a repertoire of about 30 songs: ‘The ABCs’, ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Traffic Light’ — have you heard that one? And ‘So long, Farewell,’ she was singing that as I left the house.”
According to Kidman, her tot’s talents aren’t limited to just her voice. When her dad gave a quick at-home performance before they left for the premiere, “Sunday Rose was dancing around the living room,” the Oscar winner, 43, told Us.
Adds Urban, 43, of his little girl’s skills, “I’m your typical proud dad.”
And if Sunday decides to forgo showbiz, she could have a future as a stylist.
“She loves makeup,” Kidman told Us, adding that she often helps her prep for premieres. “She’s not allowed to wear it out of the house, obviously, but she pops on a little blush and some lip gloss!”

If Nicole Kidman winds up winning the Oscar for “Rabbit Hole” this season, she has one person to thank–herself. Kidman produced the movie, based on the Broadway play, and even made an off beat choice of John Cameron Mitchell (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) to the direct the film. It’s all worked out beautifully.
Last night, Kidman–who produced the film and is doing more of that now–arrived with a bad case of laryngitis, country superstar husband Keith Urban, and no regrets. She piloted this project to victory. Here is Kidman unplugged, accessible, wry and wise.
Before she skedaddled from the Plaza Hotel party at the Oak Room, Nicole told me–in a voice more befitting Rod Stewart- that she and Urban are spending Christmas in Nashville. She’s become addicted to Tennessee. Who would have guessed that would happen?

Eye on the Oscars: The Director Preview
For ‘Hedwig’ director, filming meant catharsis for a childhood loss.
John Cameron Mitchell might not at first seem like an obvious choice to direct “Rabbit Hole,” a screen adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s play about a couple (Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart) grieving over the loss of a young child. His two previous helming credits were an adaptation of his cult stage show “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and the graphically pansexual “Shortbus.” But assumptions can be misleading.
Inspiration: “This script was the first thing that made me want to drop everything I was working on for myself. And I campaigned for it — by which I mean I had a conversation with the producer and then spoke with Nicole on the phone. She originated the project and developed the script before I came on.”
It’s personal: “I lost a brother when I was four, and he was 14. At that time, in the 1970s, you didn’t talk about your feelings. You just prayed to him in heaven and got on with it. So this film seemed like a purging of those feelings, which maybe I didn’t address at the time. I knew instantly that I had to be part of it. It worked for me emotionally.”"

Nicole Kidman interview
Ahead of the Omega store launch at the Trafford Centre, brand ambassador Nicole Kidman talks movies, being mum and staying stylish
She’s one of the highest paid actresses in the world, a wife, mother, women’s rights campaigner and beauty icon (and the face of watch brand Omega of course).
Ahead of the launch of Omega’s first boutique outside London at the Trafford Centre, we caught up with Mrs Urban to find out what makes her tick…
Most people would cut off their left arm to have an Omega watch in their Christmas stocking this year- although that would defeat the object somewhat. Omega watches are investment pieces so it must be great to get to wear as many as you like?
It’s a great honour that I get to wear these extraordinary watches. They’re quality products and I’ve been very fortunate to have had five years with Omega now and they’ve supported the work that I do for women’s rights around the world. They organised a big charity event in Hong Kong recently where we raised a lot of money for the UN Fund for Women. It was only because of Omega that we were able to do it.
With all these watches, you must be a very punctual person then?
Yes, I am. When you’re on a film set, you don’t want to keep people waiting. There are a lot of people and you have to be respectful. I actually think punctuality is about respect. That’s just how I was raised.

Nicole Kidman says playing a grieving mother in her new movie took her into ‘dangerous territory’.
The actress, a mother of three, plays a mum overwhelmed by loss after the tragic death of her young son in new movie Rabbit’s Hole.
‘It’s the thing that I’m probably most terrified of,’ Kidman said.
‘So to go into that place is almost like stepping into dangerous territory. It’s frightening but that’s what you want to do as an actor – to tell stories and step into places that I’ve never been but feel are important.’
The actress also admitted that she is so in love with husband Keith Urban she cannot spend more than three days away from him.
Kidman previously said she never spent more than a week away from the country singing star.
Now she admits: ‘We’ve get it down to three days. It keeps getting shorter and shorter. If you get married later in life there’s less time so you just want to spend that time together.’
