‘Hemingway & Gellhorn’s’ Nicole Kidman: ‘I had no idea who she was’

The opening shot focuses on an old woman’s strong, lined face. It is the unadorned visage of Martha Gellhorn, a trailblazing correspondent who covered the front lines when women didn’t. Nicole Kidman portrays her, and Clive Owen is Ernest Hemingway in HBO’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn,” airing Monday, May 28.

With the sun pouring through the windows behind her, only Kidman’s bright blue eyes bear any resemblance to that old woman. Kidman kicks off her Jimmy Choos as she sips cocoa, describing Gellhorn as “this brave, intrepid, passionate woman.”

The movie took executive producer James Gandolfini six years to bring to the screen, and director Philip Kaufman, in his first movie for television, explores how the writers met, fell in love, covered the world’s main events and fought until they had to split.

New interview with USA Today: HBO’s ‘Hemingway & Gellhorn’ couples passion and war

HBO’s ‘Hemingway & Gellhorn’ couples passion and war

Not too many people could stand up to macho Ernest Hemingway. Martha Gellhorn did.

The two lived a great and ultimately sad love story that would have been a worthy subject of their writing, he the great American novelist, she a fearless war correspondent and one of the best journalists of her day.

Hemingway is known to nearly everyone, at least by name and image, while Gellhorn, his third wife, is not. That may change with HBO’s Hemingway & Gellhorn (Monday, 9 ET/PT), a 2½-hour film that chronicles their deep, tumultuous relationship during a time when they witnessed war, chaos and some of the 20th century’s most significant moments.

For Nicole Kidman, who plays Gellhorn, the character was a revelation. “I had no idea about this woman, who was so courageous and brave in her exploration of humanity,” the actress says.

Clive Owen, Hemingway to Kidman’s Gellhorn, marvels at their relationship. “It was a very explosive coming together. They got together in the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, were both in a very extreme situation, and were hugely attracted to each other,” he says. “They were adventurers living this epic romance.”

New interview with USA Today: Nicole Kidman is holding nothing back

Nicole Kidman is holding nothing back

Looking over a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea at the exclusive Hotel Du Cap earlier this week, Nicole Kidman ponders her career.

“There has been a quietness,” she says thoughtfully. “I think I have always taken chances, but I was dormant for a while.

“It just so happened that last year I was able to jump in and go, ‘OK, I want to do these things now,’ ” she adds.

Kidman, 44, is jumping in big time at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, a few miles down the road from the celebrity enclave. The five-time Cannes veteran looks to shake things up, participating in two provocative films, The Paperboy and Hemingway & Gellhorn.

Steamy scenes

In Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy, which opens in the USA later this year, Kidman brings serious screen heat as Charlotte Bless, referred to as an “oversexed Barbie doll” in the thriller.

Nicole Kidman praises her red carpet marriage

CANNES, France (AP) — Nicole Kidman’s red carpet date travelled for 35 hours to join her in Cannes.

The actress’s husband — musician Keith Urban — made the trip from Sydney, where’s he’s been filming “The Voice,” to escort her up the famous Palais stairs at the Cannes Film Festival for the screening of her film, “The Paperboy.”

And Kidman says his effort meant “everything” to her: “As long as he’s there, he’s my rock, everything’s fine. I feel a little out to sea if he’s not there.”

Not that she didn’t know what she was doing. It’s the star’s fifth time in Cannes, so she’s used to the huge photo calls, press conferences and international interviews in the palm-tree scattered French coastal resort.

This time Kidman has two movies showing — “The Paperboy,” which is competing for the Palme d’Or top prize, and, outside of competition, the HBO movie “Hemingway & Gellhorn.”

Filed Under: Uncategorized • Posted on May 27th, 2012 by Jess • 1 Comment »

Unfortunately The Paperboy did not win anything at Cannes this year … although it probably won the unofficial title of ‘most talked about’ film, and ‘most controversial’! Nevertheless, congratulations to the Paperboy crew and cast on their film being included at the festival, and all the exciting reviews they’ve been getting.

The Cannes winners are as follows:

Palme d’Or Award – ‘Amour’
Best Director – Carlos Reygadas
Best Actress – Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur
Best Actor – Mads Mikkelsen
Best Screenplay – Cristian Mungiu

Our full Cannes coverage will start in a few minutes and continue over the coming days (there are a lot of photos — a lot ;-) ) …

Lee Daniels Explains Why Nicole Kidman Pees on Zac Efron in Paperboy
Filed Under: Uncategorized • Posted on May 26th, 2012 by Jess • No Comments »

By a Provencal mile, the most controversial film in Cannes is Paperboy from Lee Daniels, the director of Precious. Nothing else even comes close. Based on a darkly comic novel by Pete Dexter, it all unspools as a wild, unhinged southern gothic potboiler that upends whatever notions you may hold about four major Hollywood actors. Matthew McConaghey plays the investigative journalist with a raw sexual secret—and his character is investigating the story of Nicole Kidman’s “sexed-up Barbie,” a bodacious, horny gal who gets off on writing sexed-up letters to violent convicts. Zac Efron plays McConaghey’s younger, tightie-whitie-wearing brother, a naïve horndog who falls for the babe, despite the fact that she’s getting married to a swamp-dwelling racist psychopath. Many critics who were expecting another Precious have been disappointed. Others are embracing the film as an instant trash-cinema cult-classic. Everyone is arguing, but one thing is clear: When Matthew McConaghey does violent on-screen bondage, or Nicole Kidman pees on Zac Efron to heal his character’s jellyfish wound, it’s news. In Cannes, GQ asked Lee Daniels to explain the festival’s wildest film.

GQ: Hi there.
Lee Daniels: First, though, GQ is my favorite magazine. I got a lot of GQ posters in my college room in the ’70s….

GQ: What was your favorite cover?
Lee Daniels: When they put that homeboy on the cover with the mustache. It was it. It was the end. He’s my hero. Anyway…

GQ: Great. Well, Congratulations on being the most talked-about man in Cannes.
Lee Daniels: Am I? Really? Dude, it’s crazy…
