"She is that rare thing: a wonderful actress, a wonderful soul possessed of that skinlessness that the camera is greedy for, which allows us to glimpse all of her frailties, her sorrows, her joys, her good heart. She manages all of those things with grace, style and an astonishing work ethic."
- Anthony Minghella on Nicole Kidman

The film will reteam Kidman and Daldry, who worked together on "The Hours," which netted Kidman a best actress Oscar. August 15th 2007 - Nicole Kidman Explores Sci-Fi, Falls For Jackman And Craig
Film icon
So you might think, after having seen Nicole Kidman in — count 'em — three movies with ex-hubby Tom Cruise, and knowing she has two new ones with Daniel Craig on the way (including this week's "The Invasion"), that her hunky co-stars have a lot to do with her film choices. Not true, the Aussie actress insisted during a break from her latest project, "Australia." Though she might be the highest-paid actress in Hollywood — while Julia Roberts is on a break, at least — Kidman doesn't place too much importance on who gets to appear alongside her on the big screen.

August 14th 2007 - Same Old Aliens, but New Neuroses
Film icon
FEW narratives in American popular culture have proved as durably resonant — or as endlessly adaptable — as “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” the tale of a planetary takeover by extraterrestrial seed pods that replicate and replace sleeping humans. Originally a 1955 novel by Jack Finney, this paranoid fable has now cloned itself several times over, spawning four movies in five decades. Tapping into themes of individualism and conformity, personal freedom and social control, the idea of soulless “pod people” has become an all-encompassing metaphor that finds a sociopolitical relevance whatever the period.

August 14th 2007 - No peas in these pods
Film icon
"We're in danger! They're here already! You're next!"

So shrieked Kevin McCarthy at the end of the 1956 paranoid classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." He meant the Pod People, of course -- emotionless alien replicants who have replaced the good folk of Santa Mira, Calif. He could have been talking about the long, long pop-culture tail of the movie itself.

Writer and historian Richard Flanagan took some time out to speak with Australian ABC North Coast radio recently; he talked about writing Australia with Baz Luhrmann and spending some time with the film's star, Nicole Kidman. I like to just casually drop big news like this too, like for instance today I was driving to the library to finish writing up my Comic-Con posts, and I saw a guy who played a recurring character with no names on Just Shoot Me in traffic next to me.
