October 22nd 2009 - Nicole Kidman highlights violence against women
Bringing a splash of Hollywood glamour to Capitol Hill, Australian movie star Nicole Kidman has testified before lawmakers as part of her effort to stop violence against women around the world.
Kidman, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), told Congress on Wednesday that violence against women and girls was "perhaps the most systematic, widespread human rights violation in the world.
"I am far from an expert, I rely on the people I've met to make the case," admitted the actress, adding that it "recognizes no borders, no race or class."
Representatives at a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee have been hearing testimony as they debate the International Violence Against Women Act, which could influence US foreign policy in relations with countries where women's rights are not respected. ...continue

United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman and Mallika Dutt, anti-violence group Breakthrough’s Executive Director, today supported the call for a comprehensive approach by the United States to address ending violence against women. Ms. Kidman and Ms. Dutt, speaking to members of the U.S. House of Representatives Sub-Committee on International Organizations, Human Rights and Oversight, emphasized the urgency to invest in women, partner locally and provide resources for effective programmes in developing countries.
They joined Ambassador for Women’s Global Issues Melanne Verveer, Congresswoman Janice D. Shepperton Studios, London, on a bleak December day. Shrouded in a freezing fog, the lot seems faintly neglected, as though abandoned. The various buildings—prop shops, costume houses—look like little more than sheds. A car drops me off at a side door to a soundstage, where a harried but friendly publicist meets me.
Inside, it's as though a magician has waved his wand. Suddenly I am transported half a century back in time to the Italy of La Dolce Vita. To my left is an empty set-within-a-set of a Roman piazza, and to my right is a bustling re-creation of a 1960s movie studio. An intricate scaffolding of iron balconies and stairwells has been built in front of the corrugated walls of the soundstage. Nowhere, it turns out, could be more perfect for Rob Marshall to direct the song-and-dance numbers for Nine, his latest movie, because the bones of Shepperton have an uncanny resemblance to the Cinecittà of Fellini's 8½, the inspiration for Maury Yeston's 1982 Broadway musical Nine, on which this film is based.
Bang ahead of me, Daniel Day-Lewis, playing the lead, Guido, is dressed in a forties-style waistcoat, a white shirt, and beige pants. Nine is Guido's story—the tale of a legendary director who can't find a subject for his next film or a way to control the many women in his life. The issue is due out on Oct 20. I don't know if it will actually show up any earlier than that. I think I can safely say that the cover shot features Kidman, Cotillard, Cruz, and Hudson, and I believe is from the earlier Leibovitz beach shoot. It's a beautiful image.

As the (mostly male) leaders of the world's largest economies arrived in the US for the Group of 20 meeting, 300 of the globe's most influential women gathered in New York on Wednesday night determined to help tackle one of the most pressing but least noticed issues holding back global economic recovery: maternal health.
The dinner was hosted by Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Wendi Murdoch, wife of Rupert Murdoch, chief executive of News Corporation, owner of The Times, and Indra Nooyi, chief executive of Pepsi.

Nicole Kidman made a video of daughter Sunday Rose's first birthday to send to relatives.
The 42-year-old Oscar-winner and her country singer husband Keith Urban celebrated Sunday's birthday on July 7 at their family home in Nashville, Tennessee, with "a little cake".
Keith told Australia's The Age: "My wife made a beautiful video that covered her first year and we gave that to all the family."

July 13th 2009 - Buy 'Australia' clothing and items
This is quite old news now, but because I've been so slow on going through emails I've only just learnt about it now! Thanks so much to Hamish for emailing me about this.
The Australian clothing company R.M. Williams released a range of items that were featured in Australia and they are available to buy at rmwilliams.com.au. They also have a range of women's fashion created in partnership with Catherine Martin. The items are slightly pricey, with the cheapest being a belt at AUS$119, but they are worth a look!
