Nicole’s Role & Reasons

Nicole met director Philip Kaufman at a party, and said to him ‘I want to work with you. What are you doing?’. He told her about Hemingway & Gelhorn, and two days later she called him and told him she’d read the script (having obtained it unofficially!) and was ready to play what he calls “the model of that 1930s-40s smart, tough babe.”

Trivia

• Gelhorn was Hemingway’s inspiration for For Whom the Bell Tolls and the only woman who ever asked for a divorce from the writer.
• Whilst at Cannes, Nicole dedicated this film to war journalist Marie Colvin who was killed in Syria early in 2012. Nicole said Colvin was a “great admirer” of Martha Gellhorn. “I really see her as someone similar to Martha. These women are still rare and Martha was the first,” Nicole said of Martha and Marie’s profession.
