Hands up who didn’t see this coming. Just to be clear, the film has only just been announced, and Nicole is simply being suggested as the obvious choice to play her – there have been no official discussions with Nicole!
Rebekah Brooks: The Movie has been announced in Cannes, with American producers likening her life story to Pip in Great Expectations.
Producer Gene Kirkwood said Brooks’s downfall also carried echoes of Richard Nixon.
The film will be based on a recent Vanity Fair article by Suzanna Andrews called Untangling Rebekah Brooks, which traced her journey from News of the World secretary to the most powerful woman in Rupert Murdoch’s empire.
The project is in the development stage and no actress is attached, although Nicole Kidman has been suggested as a good physical likeness.
Kirkwood, whose credits include Rocky, Gorky Park and Get Rich or Die Tryin, said of Brooks: “She’s a great story. Her rise is almost like Great Expectations – with a moral.”
The film will be “a porthole into [Rupert] Murdoch’s world. I see it as a Citizen Kane approach,” he added.
Kirkwood said the project could only get under way when the phone hacking scandal concludes. “As soon as there is an ending, we’re going forward. Murdoch might retire – who knows?” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Earlier this week, Brooks was charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. She and five others, including her husband, Charlie, are accused of offences including concealing documents from police.
Brooks said the decision was unjust and she was angry that “those closest to me have been dragged into this unfairly”.
The Vanity Fair article on which the film will be based portrayed Brooks as a woman of “incandescent ambition”, who used her “magnetic attraction” to make her way in a male-dominated tabloid world.
It also described her as the “fantasy daughter” of Rupert Murdoch – “the daughter he always wished he had, the one who never argued with him, who devoted her life to pleasing him”.
Kirkwood said the budget had yet to be agreed but is likely to be modest.
