CLAIMS made by New Idea yesterday that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are to adopt a child from Vietnam have been slammed by adoption experts and laughed off by family members.

Adoption experts told Angela Saurine that Vietnam is non compliant with the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption, an international agreement between countries to prevent exploitation of children.

Australia has never had a formal inter-country adoption relationship with Vietnam.

The magazine yesterday reported on its front page that the couple, who have an 11-month-old biological daughter Sunday Rose, had begun the process to adopt.

Janine Weir, spokeswoman for Debra-Lee Furness’s Adoption Awareness Week, said she was sceptical of the report which attributed confirmation to a Hanoi Ministry of Justice staffer.

“There are international rules on how you do this,” she said.

Kidman’s mum Janelle yesterday said she knew nothing of the adoption rumours.

“That’s news to me,” she said.
