Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are facing a dilemma as their three children, particularly Maddox, 5 1/2, grow older.

Should the activist couple expose their children to the ravages of war?

And should Maddox play with toy guns?

“That’s a very tough question,” Jolie admitted Monday. “We can’t shield the world from our children, (though) I certainly think we can shield certain images. We should keep grotesque images away from the children because it could scare them. But it’s a part of the world, and we must show them.”

The topic is relevant for the couple, who made a rare appearance together at the Pacific Design Center for the Los Angeles premiere of a documentary Pitt produced. God Grew Tired of Us, opening Friday in select New York and Los Angeles theaters, follows the travels and challenges of the “lost boys” of Sudan, who were forced to flee their war-ravaged country to escape death and sterilization.

Kidman happy again

NICOLE Kidman returned to her other home – the red carpet – yesterday, just down the road from the dryout facility where her husband Keith Urban has returned to continue treatment.

Joining glamour couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for the premiere of God Grew Tired Of Us at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Aussie actress looked refreshed and happy as she waved to fans but avoided requests for interviews.

After enjoying a three-week Christmas break in Sydney, where she mixed pre-production business with Baz Luhrmann into a short stay with her embattled husband, Kidman has dived straight back into work – signing on to produce and star in the film Rabbit Hole.

With no comment from the Hollywood star since Urban’s rehab crisis last October, critics were yesterday left to speculate about her future – by reading her palm.

Perfectly groomed from head to toe, it was Kidman’s well-lined hands which came in for closer inspection. The star has reportedly admitted in the past to suffering bad circulation, which seemingly equates to bad press to some in Tinseltown.

God Grew Tired Of Us – Premiere magazine review
Filed Under: Uncategorized • Posted on January 9th, 2007 by Jess • No Comments »

God Grew Tired of Us, like many documentaries, is a study of the resilience of human nature and our ability to overcome enormous obstacles in the face of adversity. Specifically, in this case, that resilience is showcased through the story of three of Sudan’s “Lost Boys,” and their struggles to escape Sudan and build a new life in America. The film opens with vivid visuals of the Sudanese civil war, which began in the mid 1980s and has left millions dead. Twenty-five thousand pre-teen male orphans created by the atrocities, The Lost Boys as they came to be known, were forced to flee their homes and trek barefoot across the desert in search of safety. They fled to Ethiopia at first and were allowed to stay until government turmoil there forced them out. They set off to Kenya, where many are still located today. A select few, among them John Bul Dau, Panther Bior, and Daniel Pach,, were allowed to settle in the United States.

God Grew Tired of Us, which is lent plenty of glossy star power by narrator Nicole Kidman and executive producer Brad Pitt, follows these three of the less than 4000 Lost Boys who made it to America as they adjust to western culture and confront this major change in their lives already marked by great upheaval. Dau, Bior, and Pach have a difficult time adjusting to the cultural differences at first and they struggle to balance conforming to their new world while trying to maintain their own cultural identity. John Dau has plenty to say about how many of the refugees that have been relocated are becoming too westernized, but he is most candid about his own personal battle to survive in America and his desire to help the many remaining Lost Boys in Sudan. The films most endearing and poignant moment comes when he is reunited with his mother and sister.

If nothing else, this doc, which one the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, will leave you feeling that the American dream is still alive and well. More urgently, it feels like a story that needs to be told; an engine to possibly drive change in the Sudan. At the very least, it’s a powerful film.

‘God Grew Tired’ pair Brad and Nicole reunited at premiere

Even when the studios are promoting major productions it can sometimes be difficult to get the big stars out onto the red carpet. God Grew Tired Of Us, an independently made documentary about four Somalian immigrants, pulled off quite a coup, therefore, when it managed to attract some of the biggest names in the industry to its LA premiere.

Brad Pitt and his Oscar-winning partner Angelina Jolie were both in attendance for the event, along with silver screen favourite Nicole Kidman and renowned character actor Edward Norton. At first glance the movie, which follows the experiences of four young boys as they try to escape their war-torn homeland and build a new life in the US, might not seem typical Hollywood fare. The flick became something of a cause celebre, though, as Brad teamed up with Nicole to make sure it got made.

While the Babel star acted as executive producer on the flick, his Australian collaborator stepped into the role of narrator. And, given Angelina’s work with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, it would be fair to assume Brad’s partner was also keen to see the fruits of their work. Brad and Nicole’s efforts certainly seem to have paid off as the film has received glowing reviews, as well as two awards at the Sundance Festival.
