The prime minister responded to criticisms that Nicole Kidman’s Australia Day honours was part of the cult of celebrity by saying all types of excellence deserved to be honoured.

“It is a nation of all the talents,” Mr Howard said.

“Surely if we recognise business excellence, sporting excellence, humanitarian commitment surely we can also recognise artistic excellence.”
